2007, flag and performance
Heraldic flag honouring Scottish pop singer Jimmy Somerville. The flag features an image of Somerville, embroidered by artist Heather Goodchild, as well as decorative ribbons stitched with the lyrics from Bronski Beat’s 1984 gay anthem Smalltown Boy.
JIMMY premiered at the Rockstars and Wannabes exhibition at Winnipeg’s Urban Shaman Gallery, and was accompanied by a performance in which the artist ran a course carrying the flag through the city, tracing lyrics from Smalltown Boy into the geography letter by letter.
